Alpha Chi Nu, SMCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, is in full swing this Spring and we hope everyone is having a great start to their semester!
If you are a student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, your letter of invitation to Phi Theta Kappa should be arriving to your inbox and mailbox soon. Be sure to look out for them, and check your spam folders to prevent your invitation from being filtered out. You can sign up at ptk.org as soon as you receive your invitation.
Keep an eye out for our ongoing Hot Coffee and Bagel Sale, starting this Thursday, February 6th, at 8 AM and running until 10 AM in the Campus Center. Proceeds will go to benefit Alpha Chi Nu and the Captain’s Cupboard, grab some breakfast for a great cause!
Alpha Chi Nu has two travel occasions planned for the semester, the Phi Theta Kappa Regional and International Conventions. The Regional event will take place in Nashua, New Hampshire, and the International event will be in Orlando, Florida. As part of the conventions, PTK Officers will be attending lectures and workshops on topics such as: leadership, teambuilding, and academic opportunities. Alpha Chi Nu is looking forward to the chance to build a stronger Chapter and bring back knowledge that will benefit the entire SMCC community.
Officer meetings are held every Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 in the Captain’s House, stop by to see what goes on behind the scenes and become an active member. There are also still two open officer positions in Alpha Chi Nu, V.P. of Administration and V.P. of Scholarship.
Would you like to take advantage of everything Phi Theta Kappa has to offer, but are not sure how? Then Alpha Chi Nu has the solution! We will be hosting Competitive Edge and Collegefish workshops to answer questions and guide members through various topics, including scholarships, transfer assistance, Competitive Edge, and the PTK website. The workshops will be held on Tuesdays around lunchtime this semester, keep checking our Facebook page and regular Beacon articles for when and where.
The Captain’s Cupboard Food Pantry is undergoing changes to better serve the community; if you would like to ask about volunteer opportunities or have other questions, please email us at captainscupboard@smccme.edu. The Captain’s Cupboard is gratefully accepting donations of nonperishable food items at all times, a dedicated collection basket is located outside the Seawolves Café in the Campus Center.
Following a semester of hard work and research, Alpha Chi Nu has been working with individuals to reestablish the pilot community garden program. SMCC’s Community Garden is located on the South Portland Campus, overlooking Hildreth Hall. Plots should become available soon, so watch for announcements!
