From Behind the Curtain

By Jason Glynn

Well boys and girls, ladies and gents, professors and adjuncts, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. In your hands you are holding something special. You are holding the last printed issue of The Beacon for the Spring 2014 semester.

But don’t worry yet.

This summer we will be trying something new here, we will not have the print version, but we will have an online special: The Beacon Travels. The rundown of what will be running online is not fully ironed out yet. We do have a few writers doing some cool things.

I will be covering my adventure as a lab rat at UNE’s Biddeford campus, and my involvement on our campus community garden as a new member of the club. If you are doing something really cool this summer and would like to share it, then please email us!

So have no fear, we are not going the way of our many printed newspaper compatriots, for the print version will return in the fall. We were just on such a role that we couldn’t stop!!

When the print version does return in the fall it will surely be action-packed. The Maine 2014 gubernatorial campaign will be well-underway and we will be bringing the coverage to you. We have some exciting things planned, and we can’t wait to get back at it!

Hopefully you stopped by our booth at the Spring Barbeque and inquired about writing for us next year. The turnout was awesome and it was great to see everyone! We will also be looking for people to help out with layout and illustrations next fall too, there are many ways to build your resume with The Beacon!

The reasons to get involved are endless. Writing for assignments no longer seems like a big deal if you write biweekly and keep those muscles fresh. The experience will help you build your resume and college transcript. It will clearly give you an edge over many others!

We have many opportunities for you to get involved and enhance your skillset, whatever that may be. We are also a great avenue to utilize if you are involved in a club. With hundreds of student readers we can help you to get information where you want it! With a WordPress site, a Facebook page, and print, we have the tools necessary for your success!

Next week the staff here will be hitting the lanes at South Portland’s newest bowling alley: Easy Day. They are located over on Broadway, right by the bridge. If you missed us at the barbeque and want more information about getting involved, stop in and ask us some questions!

Hopefully you have an excellent summer. Whether you are taking classes or not, try to find as many excuses possible to get outside and enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer. We are only young once, don’t stress out too much over school work. Save those stresses for fall.

With that said, summer is a great chance to pause and reevaluate things as well. Your next classes, your next move, your next college, give it some thought while you have a chance. It’s your future, live it and write your history the way you’d like to!!
