SMCC kicked off competition Friday evening in the YSCC Elite Eight

Tournament in the second contest of the evening as they were pitted against the Lady

Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute. The Lynx finished the season just a hair

above the .500 mark with an overall record of 16-15, while posting an 8-5 conference

record.

The Seawolves are trying to cap off on an impressive season in which they

finished 23-7. SMCC lost only four conference games and while tallying nine wins. After

tonight’s win, the Seawolves extended their win streak to six games and have plenty of

reasons to be riding.

Action was fast early on, as the Lady Wolves put the pressure on the NHTI

offense, pressing them the full court forcing the Lynx guards to work harder bringing the

ball up court. The Lady Lynx had trouble adapting to the swarming SMCC defense,

turning the ball over 16 times in the first half.

SMCC was able to find their rhythm offensively early on in the game, as NHTI

did not have an answer for SMCC’s ability to get in the lane and find the hoop. The post

play of Seawolves; Amira Jpones, Maria Vieno and Alicia Hoyt established inside

dominance early on, as the team scored 32 of their 49 first half points inside the paint.

The Lady Wolves continued their high energy offense and tight defense in the

second half which enabled them to coast to an 95-66 victory behind the dominance of

Maria Veino. Maria Veino proved to be the top producer for the Wolves posting a

double-double before the first half was finished. Veino finished the game with 16 points,

18 rebounds, as well as being credited with three steals and two blocked shoots.

Amira Jones was the team’s high scorer with 19 points including going three for

four from three the foul line, collecting five steals and grabbing 4 rebounds.

Alicia Hoyt finished the evening with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The SMCC Women Seawolves will resume action on Saturday at noon in a highly

anticipated game against The College of St. Joseph’s.
