The Yankee Small College Conference post-season basketball tournament, The Elite Eight Road to Union Town, PA, tipped off officially today at 3pm when the University of Maine-Machias took to the court against the College of St. Joseph’s of Vermont.
The St. Joseph’s squad enters the tournament as the top seeded team and as the number one ranked team in the USCAA. The Lady Saints enter the tournament with a 25-1 record sporting an unblemished conference record of 13-0. For the curious, the Lady Seawolves of SMCC dropped a hard fought game in Randolph, Vt on January 9th to St. Joe’s 60-56.
The Clippers of Machias enter the tournament with a 5-15 overall record, and a 4-9 conference record. In their previous meeting St. Joe’s overwhelmed the Clipers 109-34 in Machias.
After a sluggish first quarter, The Lady Saints started to pour it on strong as they took advantage of UMM turnovers and an inability to mount a sustained offensive building a 26point half time lead.
The second half saw much of the same as St Joe’s continued to drive the court offensively and shut down the Clipper’s defensively. Arreonte Anderson drained 26 points leading the Saints as Jazsala Laracuente’s 19, Regina Steele’s 13 and Kelly Festa’s 10 rounded out the high scorers for St Joe’s.
The Lady Clipers were lead by Alayna Caricofe’s 7, Kali Alley’s 6 and Ami Carver’s 5.
