The SMCC Student Senate represents our incredibly active student body. At student senate meetings, members advance progress on campus and impact change. Why should you get involved?
You, personally, can gain a lot from the student senate. Most simply, you can expand your résumé and build experience. You gain invaluable skills for future employment, such as leadership and communication skills. Your social skills may be enhanced through your interaction with students from many backgrounds with varying perspectives. You are given the opportunity to network with students and faculty. You may even consider running for a position of leadership, further expanding your résumé and enhancing your ability to make changes.
More excitingly, you have the unique opportunity to advance student progress. You bring to the table your own ideals, which is necessary for a senate equally representing the diversity of the seawolf community. You can, and should, lobby for your ideas.
You also have the ability to participate in workshops to more directly affect change. For example, the senators are currently working on implementing a campus kitchen for those who live on campus to have the recourses to cook healthy meals for themselves. These types of ideas may greatly improve the lives of students.
Some students would never consider joining the student senate. It is likely that they haven’t heard of the student senate, or would not see themselves finding a niche there. And yet, after one or two meetings, it becomes pretty apparent that you fill a niche no one else possibly could just because of the unique perspective you bring to each prospect. You possess the ability to build tomorrow. The first step is showing up!
Student Senate meets on Wednesdays from 4:15 – 6:00 pm in the Jewett Hall Auditorium. Come share your voice, effect change, overcome challenges, and have fun!
