A Point of Clarification

Surfsite Residence Hall (now co-ed)

In the September 13th issue of the Beacon, in the column Surfsite Hall Isn’t Bad! we erroneously stated that Surf Site Residence Hall was originally a barracks when the grounds of SMCC was an  a naval post. The truth of the matter is that Fort Preble was originally an army post and was transferred to the navy a few years after the end of World War II. Maine Vocational Technical
Institute, the first incarnation of what would become SMCC, moved from Augusta in 1952 taking up residence at Fort Preble. An interesting side note: at the time when MVTI moved to South Portland the school was all male. The Surfsite Residence Hall was not built until the 1970’s.
