Domestic Violence Month

Alex Serrano

October is Domestic Violence month, and we here at the Beacon have taken extra care to bring some of the complex issues around this to light. The front page articles are informative and meant to help the SMCC student population understand these issues.

In the online version of our paper, the SMCC Beacon WordPress,  you’ll find a survivor’s story of domestic abuse. The write up was submitted by SMCC’s Dean of Student Life, Tiffanie Bentley. “Why Don’t You Just Leave,” should hit a chord in all our readers. One that hopefully resonate in a discordant manner, inspiring a rise up to say “enough is enough.”

In reporting on these issues, we hope that we are informative, concise, and heartfelt. Later this month, keep an eye on the MySMCC Student Life Calendar for upcoming events with a focus on sexual awareness. In a world of Tinder dates, pardoned rapists, and random hook-ups, sometimes the only defense is knowledge and self-awareness. Because what you do contributes to everyone else around you, whether they or you know it or not. Keep informed. Stay positive. Get help.
