Last Saturday a week ago, golf teams from New Hampshire Technical Institute, Great Bay Community College, University of Maine-Augusta and Dean College traveled to Sable Oaks Golf Course in South Portland to join the SMCC golf team for a SMCC home invitational.
At the end of the day, the Seawolves squad finished with the lowest score on their cards shooting a team score of 366. NHTI finished the day with a 390. Great Bay Community College took the bronze with a 454, Dean College score of 460, as UMA finished out the jaunt across Sable Oaks tallyig a 484.
This past Sunday, the SMCC team traveled to Natanis Golf Course to take to the links against University of Maine-Augusta. While the scores were too late to post for this edition of the Beacon, the reader, sporting enthusiast, golf novice or expert will know; that everyone cursed a shoot that landed them in trouble, as well as finishing off a great shoot with a fist pump ala Tiger Woods.
For a few hours on the 17th, the Beacon followed Ben Wade and Jacob Locke around the front nine of Sable Oaks. While Wade and Locke did not score as well as their teammates, Seth Chim and Kevin Dwyer who shoot rounds of 82, watching them negotiate a very difficult course was enlightening and quietly exciting.
On the sixth hole, a short par three, SMCC’s Jacob Locke’s tee shoot landed approximately 14 feet north of the hole. After watching UMA’s Lee MacDowell drain a chip from approximately 20 feet from the hole, Jacob putted for a birdie only to watch his put slow up and lose energy a foot and half from the hole. Jacob would put out for a very respectable par.
Fate would not shine on Ben Wade as it did for UMA’s MacDowell, on the somewhat short par 5 second hole as Wade’s chip from 34 feet out slid by the hole, missing the mark by less than a foot or less.
A week earlier, September 10th, The Seawolves traveled to Beaver Meadow Golf Course in New Hampshire to play in a six team invitation. The Wolves would shoot a team score of 360 falling one stroke shy of tying and 2 strokes off of wining the day. The Paul Smith and Dean College teams would shoot team scores of 359. NHTI would place third shooting a 367, as the College of St. Joseph’s and University of Maine-Augusta would round out the field with a 386 and 481 respectfully.
SMCC’s Seth Chim low score of 79, which would earn him YSCC Golf Player of the Week for the week of September 14th. Freshman Kevin Dwyer ended the day with a very respectable 83, placing fifth overall. Ben Wade and Jacob Locke carded a 96 and 102, as Justin Royce scored a 114 as the Seawolves fifth player.
The SMCC golf team takes to the links next week as they travel to Spring Meadow Country Club in Grey Maine to paly University of Maine-Augusta.
