With one match remaining in the always-fleeting fall golf season that plagues northern New England, the SMCC golf team has been showing improvement on the links over the course of the last two weeks. The SeaWolves traveled to the Augusta Country Club to participate in the UMA Invitational on Sept. 30. A week later the SeaWolves hosted New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI), Great Bay Community College, and the University of Maine–Augusta at Purpoodock Golf Club, the ‘Wolves’ home course, in Cape Elizabeth.
In Augusta, the team carded its first first-place finish after 18 holes of play against the Moose from UMA and the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The SeaWolves finished with a team score of 362, which was 100 strokes better than UMA, and 101 strokes better than Presque Isle’s 463 team score.
While the SeaWolves took team honors, it was UMA’s Evan Kordalski who took individual top honors with an 83. SeaWolf teammates Kevin Dwyer and Seth Chim finished tied for second, as both players shot an 87. Hunter Carignan recorded a 90 and Tyler Hensley broke into the double digits, continuing to trim strokes off of his score like one trims the fat off of a holiday goose.
A week later the SeaWolves hosted a YSCC match at Purpoodock Golf Club and failed to record a team score, as they could not field a team of four golfers.
Individually, SeaWolf Hunter Carignan tied for low score with Evan Kordalski from UMA when they recorded an 83 after 18 holes of play. SMCC’s Seth Chim took the silver with a 86. The most exciting finish of the day goes to SeaWolf McKenze Coyne, who birdied holes 17 and 18 to finish with a season-low 91.
NHTI took team honors at Purpoodock with a 384 as UMA took the team silver, scoring a 489. Like SMCC, Great Bay Community College did not qualify as a team; they too could not field a team of four golfers.
The golf team travels to Pease Golf Course on Oct. 14 to participate in the Yankee Small College Conference Championships. The Beacon wishes the SeaWolves golf team the best of luck hitting them far and fair.
