The SeaWolves softball and baseball teams were the last teams standing this past Saturday when both teams ran the tables in their Fall Invitational games.
The Lady SeaWolves would outlast the College of St. Joseph of Vermont’s Saints 14-13, earning a trip to the championship game against the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute. The Lady SeaWolves would survive another one-run game, 4-3, and be crowned winners of the 2017 Fall Championship.
On the baseball diamond, the SeaWolves would start their day off against the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College, winning 3-2, setting up the championship game against NHTI.
In the championship game, SMCC centerfielder Cody Bryant would lead the bottom of the first inning off with a walk, which was followed by a single by Justin Leeman. A single by Caleb Chambers scored Bryant from second, as Lee advanced to second. Sean Adams would single next, driving in Leeman and sending Chambers to second base. Timothy Greenlaw would also single, driving in Chambers and advancing Adams to second.
After Nathaniel Cyr struck out, Carter Chabot would drive in Greenlaw and Adams with a triple. The SeaWolves’ scoring would end when Chabot scored on a passed ball to Dylan Francoeur.
With a six-run padded lead, SMCC pitcher Amos Herrin would find his groove, allowing one run to cross the plate in the top of the fourth, while striking out 12, giving up four hits and walking two.
On the softball diamond, the Lady SeaWolves would take a two-run lead in the top of the third inning when Sara Ring and Emma Burns scored on a throwing error by the NHTI catcher. SeaWolf Madison Eastman would be thrown out at the plate trying to pad SMCC’s lead.
The Lynx would take back the lead in the bottom of the third, plating three runs on three hits while leaving one runner on base. All of the Lynx’s scoring would come with two outs.
With runners on second and third base, Elizabeth DeVoss singled to left field, advanced to second on the throw into the infield, scoring Gina Costello, who was on third. Taylor Gagnon, the Lynx’s next batter, singled to left next; she scored Brianna Connelly, who was on second when the Lynx’s rally began, and advancing DeVoss to third.
The Lynx’s finale run of the inning came when SeaWolf catcher Sara Ring threw to second in an attempt to pick off Gagnon as she stole second base; the throw opened the door for DeVoss to score from third.
The ‘Wolves would even the tally in the top of the fourth inning, when Eastman drove in Breanna Lavacchia with a sacrifice fly. The ‘Wolves would take the lead in the top of the sixth with another sacrifice fly by Meranda Martin, scoring Lauryn Fagan from third.
SeaWolf pitcher Kristen Mackenzie would go the full seven innings, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out five.
SMCC catcher Caleb Chambers would be awarded the Defensive Player of the Tournament award. SeaWolf starting pitcher Amos Herrin would take home the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament.
The SMCC baseball team finishes out their fall season on the road against Northern Essex Community College on Oct. 14 and against Holyoke Community College on Oct. 15. The men hold an 11-3 record, and with a solid showing at NECC and HCC, could end the fall season on an incredible note.
The Lady SeaWolves end the season with a 4-2 record, and are off till the spring season starts when St. Joseph’s visits SMCC. The Beacon would like to congratulate both squads for a season well completed.
