Wednesday is the night magic is happening with a one of a kind open mic at The Dogfish Bar and Grille, easily accessible by SMCC students via Portland buses. The event is all ages, so you do not have to be 21 to enter. The first time I entered the stylish brick structure I was overcome by an atmosphere of talent and eager listeners. The accommodating bar and seating beckons you to sit and enjoy music comfortably, as well as a great selection of food and Matt, a bartender at Dogfish for nine years and counting, commented “There’s a good crowd that comes in each week. A lot of talent use this place to cut their teeth; a lot of artists have started out here.” This includes acts such as Portland’s popular Ghost Of Paul Revere, who now tour all over the country. Among bands starting out here is 13 Scotland Drive, who were Wednesday night’s special feature. The featured artist performs in the middle of open mic, dividing it into two sections.
What makes it one of a kind? It is organized by poet/artist Michele Arcand, who has been running open mic for 12 years. Michele is also the author of two poetry books filled with insightful and powerful poems, and is currently working on her third. These are available for purchase from her directly. She started out the night with an inspiring quote that really set the mood, and this week perfectly reflected Dogfish Bar and Grille, from Plato: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
Michele also added “I love supporting and connecting people, which this open mic has done and will continue to do. Seattle in the 90s is Portland in the now.”
Wednesday nights here are about building a musical community, the best part of which is that people come out just to listen to these artists. The musicians’ message is heard and taken in, not to mention the sound is always dialed right in. Being a medium sized venue, that can be hard to do, yet when done right makes for a powerful mix.
The Dogfish Bar and Grille is located at 128 Free Street right in Portland, Maine. They are open daily from 11:30 am Monday thru Saturday and 12pm on Sundays. There is live music Wednesday through Saturday, with jazz every Friday night and even trivia every Tuesday. The Dogfish also features daily food specials.
