Housing Crisis in Maine Reaches High

Last week we peered into the housing crisis of Maine and the appalling shortage of affordable housing in the state. Southern Maine Community College has helped students have access to housing by making tuition less costly, and even free for some Maine students, with housing and meal plans being the remnants of a cheaper education. A short look into an article by OurView, One of Maine’s news sources, and we can begin to understand the urgency of the housing shortage. “Statewide, there is a shortage as high as 25,000 units, a number that has risen steadily and predictably for years as building failed to keep up with demand,”  states Brianna Soukup regarding low-income housing. I was shocked to discover the story of a family living in a white van in the parking lot of the Kennebunk service plaza as of July, 2022. Outside the vehicle on a cooler sat Jeanie Cannell, the mother and wife holding together a family’s fleeting hope of safe living.
