SMCC has taken a significant step towards enhancing access to higher education by offering two years of free college tuition to high school graduates who faced the challenges of the pandemic. This initiative was made possible when Maine lawmakers allocated a substantial sum of $20 million on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, to support free college education. 

Under this program, recent graduates from the years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 are eligible for this remarkable opportunity, which relieves them of tuition costs. Moreover, Maine demonstrated its commitment to education by passing an additional $15 million on July 11, 2023, to extend free college benefits for the upcoming years, 2024 and 2025. Importantly, this generous offer is not confined solely to SMCC but extends to all seven community colleges in Maine. For students enrolled part-time, a four-year window is provided to complete their associate’s degree, offering flexibility to accommodate other commitments. On the other hand, full-time students have a two-year window to attain their educational goals without tuition costs. beyond this timeframe, students who opt to continue their education will be required to cover the associated expenses.

 This opportunity is available anyone! which means that an out of state student can take advantage of this grant. But they must live in Maine while enrolled in classes. This helps Maine in a couple of ways first being able to let more students get a degree, but it drives people over to our state. The second being how it will grow our workforce. This approach aligns with Maine’s overarching goal of providing higher education opportunities to its citizens while also addressing the workforce’s needs. When evaluating the implications of making college education free, there are both advantages and disadvantages to consider. Nevertheless, this initiative signifies a positive stride towards making college more accessible and appealing to high school students. Studies consistently show that individuals who pursue higher education, whether at a two-year or four-year institution, tend to achieve better outcomes in life compared to those who do not pursue higher education.
