A Review of SMCC’s study spaces

Here at SMCC, students have access to study spaces on campus that each serve as their own sanctuaries for students. Depending on how you like to study, there are dozens of different places where you can go to do your school work in a fresh environment and meet more people to study with.

These are some of the SMCC-provided study spaces and their scores based on a few key points that are important to a Southern Maine Scholar. The readiness of the space, meaning is it available for use often or are there complications with using it for extended periods. The business level of the space, one of the biggest disruptors to studying is noise. Would this space be usable without headphones? And, the overall ambiance of the space,

The Library

The Library is the most popular study space on campus. From desks with tall dividers to the lounge area with massive windows and couches, the library has many benefits when looking for just ambiance. As well as being right next to the campus tutoring center, there are many upsides to studying in the library. However, one big issue I run into when I am in the library is the amount of people. Unless you go in the early morning or late afternoon, it can be hard to find a place in the library that doesn’t feel busy.

Spring Point Study Rooms

Spring Point has one group study room on each floor. They all come with at least one couch, some chairs, a few tables, and some come with a whiteboard to write thoughts down at. They sometimes hold events like board game nights and arts and craft events but are otherwise not very busy.

Hildreth Center Study Room

On the Second floor of the Hildreth center, there is a small area with a few couches and a coffee table. It is very open and with the big window that faces the sun it lets in a lot of natural light and heat. However, sometimes the sun over bakes the room and makes it pretty warm so wear something comfortable.

The Noisy Lounge

In the campus center right below the library is a popular spot for students called the “noisy” lounge. You will find a lot of students studying the primary function of the noisy lounge and what it is usually used for is a place for students to hang out with friends in between classes. For casually studying, the noisy lounge is a great place to get work done in between classes.
