Moving on can be a difficult thing, but Maine-native Griffin William Sherry channeled that energy into his new album Hundred Mile Wilderness. Sherry is the former frontman of the local sensation band The Ghost of Paul Revere, which split up amicably in 2022. Since then, he has been on the road, playing shows, and producing a new album. Griffin teased the release of the album throughout the summer by releasing three singles: Reflections, Roll Down Slow, and Juliet, all of which appear on the complete album. Hundred Mile Wilderness released Sep 20, 2024 on all platforms.
Hundred Mile Wilderness is a strong solo leadoff for Sherry, who takes the blueprint of The Ghost of Paul Revere and builds upon it with his own vision. While being a relatively short album, only ten songs, Sherry manages to pack a folk-rock, foot-stomping punch. The title of the album refers to the vast wooded areas in Maine, as well as the 282 miles of the Appalachian Trail that runs through the state.
The album opens with Reflections, which sounds like it could’ve come straight off of an early Ghost of Paul Revere album with its use of harmonica, which the band used less frequently after their second album. The following song As For Last Night utilizes the fiddle to great effect – far more than Sherry’s former band did, which further distinguishes Hundred Mile Wilderness from his previous work. While The Ghost of Paul Revere did use drums in the latter half of their lifecycle, it always seemed overshadowed by the use of banjo and bass guitar. Sherry changed this for his solo album with songs like Lost Cause and Roll Down Slow, which feature drums in a more prominent role, driving the beat and symbolizing Sherry’s shift from holler-folk to folk-rock.
The future is bright for Griffin William Sherry. His first solo endeavor showcases his vocal range and hit-making talent. Hundred Mile Wilderness has a very radio friendly sound and has already made multiple appearances on local radio. It is only a matter of time until this talented musician from Buxton becomes a household name in the new country scene.
