The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans played their home opener last Friday after kicking off their season with a dominant 42-0 win at Scarborough on September 5. They continued to bring this energy to their home opener against the Bangor Rams on Saco Junior-Trojan Night, also known as the “blackout” game.
Bangor had come off a win in their season opener at home over Deering and held the size advantage going into this game. Quarterback Kyle Johnson of Bangor is a physical runner, and Bangor hoped to impose its will in the trenches. However, the Trojans used their speed advantage precisely where they needed to. Specifically, the outside zones of the field, and getting playmakers like Nate Neely and Simon Gellis involved on the perimeter.
Running back Connor Ayoob was one of three running backs to score on Friday, and wide receiver Simon Gellis caught two more from Junior quarterback Noah Fullerton. The game was swung on a key interception in the third quarter from senior Dominic Hussey. In the end, the Trojans dominated, winning 42-7 over Bangor. Yet again, Coach Kevin Kezal turns over a roster with a lot of young talent and opens the season with two dominant wins. He’s won seven gold balls, and he continues to keep putting the Trojans in positions to succeed and setting them up for another deep playoff run.
The question is, can the Trojans continue to win regular-season games at this mind-boggling rate? Or will the ladder of the season prove more difficult than in past seasons? Only time will tell, but after multiple 40-point games to open their season, I’d say they’re off and running for another season in gold ball contention.
