On Tuesday, November 11th, Northern Lights were seen throughout the United States. The reason that people could see the northern lights on Tuesday night was that there was a geomagnetic storm.
Beautiful green and pink colors. Seen in lots of states, including but not limited to; Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Florida, Texas. It was visible all the way from New York to Northern California. It’s very rare for northern lights to be seen so far south. This shows that the storm was pretty severe.
This storm happened from charged particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. Specifically, the sun’s charged particles. This storm made the sky bright with colors. Storms like these can mess with certain technology as well, like power grids and radio communication.
Tuesday’s storm was a coronal mass ejection (CME). That is plasma from the sun’s atmosphere and magnetic field that blasts towards the Earth. Two of these CMEs came towards Earth on Tuesday. The storm was a level four for a geometric storm. That is considered severe. It was eight times stronger than normal, according to Shawn Dahl. On Wednesday, there was a third CME stronger than the two on Tuesday
