After losing to the Dallas Cowboys by a field goal accompanied by the immense amount of injuries, it’s reasonable to assume that the Chiefs’ playoff hopes are hanging by a thread.
Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid speaks at postgame press conference after their 28-31 loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving day.
Kansas City, Missouri. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid sounded rather discouraged when asked about his teams slim to none playoff hopes, which became even more slim not only last week amid a Thanksgiving day loss to the Cowboys, even over the weekend when other results didn’t go in their favor.
The 3x Super Bowl champion Chiefs’ are currently 6-6 with around five total games remaining, and hypothetically speaking even if they managed to win every single game they’ll still need help if they want to make yet another trip into the postseason. Because when the steelers lost to the Bills this past Sunday, that game dropped the Chiefs to 10th in the AFC playoff picture, thanks in part to a rather unfortunate 3-4 record against the rest of the conference.
Depending entirely on the metrics, the Kansas City Chiefs have a one in three chance of competing in the postseason.
”If you’re coming to me,” stated Reid Monday, ”we’re going to go after you every game, and that’s how we roll. We’re going to tickle your tonsils on every play, every game. But that’s the attitude we’re coming in with, and then you let the chips fall where they may.”
The Kansas City Chiefs are currently ranked third within their division (AFC west) as they prepare for their next matchup against the Texans this Sunday night, and are nearly from their opportunity of obtaining a 10th consecutive division title. Right now, their focus is all about extending a playoff streak that traces back to the 2015 season, and the third with Reid as head coach, and on top of that three full seasons directly before Patrick Mahomes became the first string quarterback.
However, there is a reason for having faith and hope: The last time Kansas City was 6-6 was all the way back in 2017, and they won their last four games to earn a wild card bid.
”Every season is different,” Reid stated. ”This is a sport of challenges. That’s what it is. It’s probably a microcosm of life as you look at it. There’s always challenges. … There’s a rather small margin between both winning and losing that every game and week is a challenge of its own. That’s the appropriate way to approach it, and you have to be ready for it.”
The largest challenges that the Chiefs are currently facing right now are of their own doing. They’ve been brought down by numerous penalties and psychological mistakes throughout much of the season, specifically in their 31-28 loss to the Cowboys, when an abundance of flags flew during the fourth quarter ultimately preventing them from having an opportunity to pull of a comeback victory.
The Kansas City Chiefs have allowed the fifth-most penalty yardage within the NFL this season.
”We have to make sure we take care of business with the penalties, keep working our fundamentals and techniques,” Reid stated. ”Not saying I agree with all of them, or half of them (against Dallas). But they took place. We’re not going to use that as an excuse.”
Nor was Reid about to justify any of the issues in which occurred throughout much of game particularly on the offensive side of things. When looking at the defense the pass rush was considerably inconsistent producing only twenty-two a total that is better than just five other teams. Or a defense that has only produced roughly eleven turnovers, a total that’s better than three other teams within the league.
”You’re one or two plays away and that’s what this game is,” Reid stated. ”You look at our season, we’re one or two plays off, and we take care of that — whether it’s a penalty at a crucial time, a possible turnover somewhere, or having a chance to create a turnover — we are right in position where if we can figure out those two, three plays, you flip this around.”
Time is however running out, though. And while Reid sounded rather brutally honest regarding the Chiefs’ playoff peril Monday, he also stated that he understands the reality of the seemingly dire situation.
”You’re not going to hear a lot of positives from the outside coming in,” Reid stated, ”so you have to make sure you understand where you really sit, and the opportunity you have sitting in front of you.” You know, there’s still opportunities.”
