We’re officially entering week 14, and it’s safe to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t in the best position as they’re currently sitting at an overall record of 6-6, have lost five of their last seven, and are making their way down to Baltimore to face the Ravens. Ahead of that, let’s take a look into this upcoming week’s mailbag if you will.
Analyzing the game two days in advance, we can see that the steelers have an abundance of issues both offensively and defensively perhaps their most notable issue is the inconsistency from first string one time Super Bowl champion and MVP Aaron Rodgers who was injured in week 11 against the Bengals, and despite this they ended up blowing the Bengals out of the water to extend the win streak which didn’t last very long after that game.
While all teams have has their fair share of struggles both offensively and defensively, the Steelers are just one of those teams this season that can’t seem to get around the various obstacles, from failing to capitalize on plays particularly within the red zone all the way to the secondary failing to play zone and maintain efficient coverage. Even with all of this in mind the big question still remains, will the steelers need to move on from Rodgers and resort to a more dynamic quarterback?
While this question will remain unanswered, It’s certainly time to acknowledge the one quarterback that is while currently injured could very well make a series of contributions to the team and not only make a statement but push the team in the correct and/or ideal direction. After recently joining in on the quarterback carousel and even within the last few offseason’s, and much to the dismay of all steelers fans. However keeping in mind that even with the possibility of the Steelers releasing Rodgers, he’ll likely end up retiring instead of continuing on within the league, which will subsequently result in slim pickings for the upcoming 2026 NFL draft.
Fortunately, one option just became seemingly obvious. Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon had announced that Kyler Murray won’t end up playing for the remainder of the season. As Murray has been dealing with a rather bad foot injury that as a result has kept him on the sidelines for months, however this particular announcement seems to say more towards the quarterbacks future within the league and Arizona than it does about his overall health status. Many signs point in the direction that the cardinals will be moving on from Murray this upcoming offseason.
Even if they do, the Pittsburgh steelers should at the very least test the waters if you will to see what the package would look like. After all, Murray could very well be the best decision that they could make to uphold the quarterback position moving forward.
Even with this specific move more than likely into effect, it’s worth referring back to Murray’s career stats in Arizona, and while he has been rather inconsistent throughout his career at quarterback. He has certainly had trouble with stringing together successful performance’s, resulting in an abundance of frustration among many Arizona Cardinals fans. Despite this, it’s rather clear that he does possess the necessary abilities to be an efficient quality starting quarterback in the NFL. At times, he’s played at a top ten level.
Going forward, the steelers will more than likely be picking near the middle of the first round for two consecutive years going into the 2026 NFL draft, and making their chances of identifying a top tier starting quarterback that could be the face of their franchise slim to none. Hypothetically even if the steelers end up drafting a young quarterback, the remaining portion of the roster will likely be aged out of contention once the prospect is ready to compete at a professional level. Especially if their current regime is still next season, it wouldn’t exactly be abnormal to make yet another win-now move.
Even after head coach Gannon’s most recent press conference announcement, the Cardinals have lost all leverage that they once possessed within potential Murray trade. It’s clear that they are approaching the idea considering a trade block with the steelers, so it may not require too much to acquire him. As a matter of fact there’s even a chance of the Cardinals cutting him going into the offseason if they can’t find an ideal trade partner.
At the very least, the Pittsburgh Steelers should without a doubt heavily monitor the situation going forward. If Rodgers walks away in the offseason, Murray will likely end up being their best choice to remaining in playoff contention going into 2026 and beyond.
