Phone Addiction

I’ve made it a habit to no longer wake up and not look at my phone. Using your phone right after waking up seems small, like it doesn’t really matter. But it actually has a big effect on your whole day. When you wake up and your first dopamine hit comes from your phone, your brain starts chasing that same feeling over and over. What does that look like? Five minutes turning into an hour in bed, scrolling before leaving your house, scrolling throughout the day, checking your phone after you start school work, and again for hours right before you sleep.
According to research, checking your phone first thing in the morning can mess with your dopamine balance. Your brain is naturally at a calm state when you wake up, but when you instantly scroll, it creates a spike that your brain has to correct, making you feel more tired and unmotivated after (Svitorka). This is why people feel off or foggy before their day even really starts. But the fault is not just on you, its also on these apps. Many apps are designed to be addictive on purpose. They use things like notifications, infinite scrolling, and delayed rewards to keep you coming back. This is similar to how slot machines work, where you dont know when the reward is coming, so you keep checking (Keyphone). Over time this builds habits that feel automatic, like reaching for your phone without even thinking.
Another big problem is that the more we are on our phones, the harder it becomes to have original thoughts. With so much constant content, we are always consuming instead of creating. This makes it harder to focus, think deeply, and be present in real life. Phone addiction might seem small, but it slowly takes control of your time, focus, and even your mind.
