Mark Read
Mark Read is a filmmaker, radio show host, writer, and professor of Communications at Southern Maine Community College. Currently he’s a cultural reporter for The Indypendent, a New York City based weekly newspaper for which he has written movie reviews and opinion articles for the last decade. His films have been shown at such venues as the Tribeca Film Festival, The Whitney Museum of Art, and Rooftop Film Festival, among others. His short film “Occupy Wall Street Bat Signal” was selected to be a part of “Mic Check,” a compilation of short films that documented the Occupy Wall Street movement. His interest in film and television dates back to his time as an undergraduate and continued through graduate school, but he only started writing movie reviews formally in 2016, when he reviewed Oliver Stone’s biopic “Snowden.” He is keenly interested in how media both reflects and shapes the dominant culture, and how media producers can affect positive political change through their work.
