If you’ve ever driven through downtown Biddeford, it’s likely you’ve seen the old clock tower resting on the ground in front of the old Lincoln Mill. But have you ever stopped to look at it, to see the way time has chipped away at the paint, to see the ivy growing around it? Probably not, unless your name is Geneva Kimball.
Geneva is an instructor in the Architectural and Engineering Design program here at SMCC, and she is also an art student. As an independent study for her senior project, she sought to work with new mediums — acrylic paints, conte crayons, watercolor paints, and more — and explore outside her comfort zone, challenging herself. Over the course of a semester, Geneva created 8 new pieces of artwork, spending 25-35 hours on each individual piece — and that doesn’t include her preliminary sketching, either!
I have had the chance to view some of Geneva’s work before, and her art never ceases to amaze me. She takes scenes that people may drive past every day and never see, and transforms them into something you stop and take notice of. The Lincoln Mill clock tower, the Palace Diner, and the reflection in a silver teapot are each the focus of one of Geneva’s paintings. If you haven’t had the chance to view her work yet, you ought to head over to the second floor of the Captain’s House here on campus, across from the Construction Technology building. Her art will be on display until Thursday, December 11.
