Our current Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is reportedly considering using federal funds that are meant for improving academic achievement for another purpose: to allow states to purchase guns for their schools. This is in response to the horrible school shootings that have become commonplace in America today, but is this response sensible? There are schools that desperately need funds for after-school programs or to hire more teachers; instead Ms. DeVos would rather use those funds to arm school teachers.
Think about the tragic school shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school last Valentines Day. There was an armed security guard there and the gun he was carrying did nothing to stop the slaughter that took place that day. So why is DeVos considering using funds meant to improve students education to purchase guns for teachers? Instead of looking for a real solution to the school shootings that happen far to often in our country, DeVos seems to be using her position of power to put policies in place that are only serving her political philosophy.
Studies have shown that states that have more guns have many more accidental deaths from firearms compared to states that have less guns. Often the victims of accidental shooting are children. Children aged five to 14 in the U.S. are 11 times more likely to die from an accidental gunshot wound than kids in other developed countries. Why should we use our resources to put more guns near children in a place where they’re supposed to feel safe? If implemented, this policy could very well result in accidental deaths of school children — while not doing anything to stop school shootings as a whole.
Arming teachers isn’t even a popular policy idea. According to a SurveyMonkey poll, a majority of Americans believe that arming teachers would make schools more dangerous, not less. Hey, Betsy, how about you listen to the voice of the people and use your position to implement popular policies? Of course you’ll probably ignore what the people want and just put guns in schools anyway. But when that doesn’t work out, how about you give your brother Erik Prince a call and get Blackwater mercenaries to patrol the schools? I’m sure that’ll solve school shootings.
