Security? Privacy? Why not both? VPNs are used to achieve both of these. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are a way to encrypt and transmit your data over a public network.
So what are the 14 eyes and why does it matter if I use these VPNs, that are in the jurisdiction of the 14 eyes? The 14 eyes are a collective of western countries with powerful intelligence agencies such as NSA, MI6, CSIS, ETC that share information together. The countries that are apart of this are: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Sweden and Spain.
They can do anything they want including FORCING companies to give up CUSTOMERS data with or without the CUSTOMERS knowing, tapping into fibre optic cables, accessing anyone’s financial data, and “modifying” encryption standards.
Some Companies like NordVPN, IPVanish and CyberGhost VPN have features such as “No log Policy” and “Highest Encryption Possible”. If the VPN companies are in the jurisdiction of the 14 eyes and a government entity needs information for whatever reason, then they can get it. If they don’t want to ask then they will wiretap the VPN companies without them knowing to get the information.
Check where your VPN is located. If the VPN you are using is in the jurisdiction of the 14 eyes, see if there are any VPNs that aren’t based in the 14 eyes. If you are okay with your data being handed over without you knowing then keep using that VPN. If not, find another VPN. Be careful and stay safe.
