Ye West and Social Media Culture

Why Ye West is the perfect example of toxic social media culture

World famous celebrity Ye West has a reputable past of mental illness and ranting on social media… Are the two linked?

The new world of social media has shaped the way the everyday person perceives mental illness and our sensitivity to it. Obviously this is a progressive way to look at it, but it has opened our eyes to the struggles someone with an eating disorder undergoes, what beauty through the eyes of someone with body dysmorphia looks like, or how ignorant a racist is at the core. We’ve seen it all, from Donald Trump’s rants on Twitter about politics to Ye West’s rants on social media about, well, everything. As someone who suffered from BPD, the world has been understanding about his emotional virtual outbursts. This also has protected him in the past from the consequences of cancel culture or his own fan base turning against him. But the bigger picture remains that social media has become a field for everyone to expose their dirty laundry in the heat of the moment. If this is the new culture of social media then where does that leave the users who are more private about their personal lives? Are they the outcasts or the “normal” ones among us?

Although our world has become more sensitive to the experience of those who suffer from mental illness, it also can’t be ignored that social media users contribute to some of those mental illnesses. Culture for one is one of the biggest contributors to the arising epidemic of people over sharing on platforms like Instagram and Twitter. It’s just bigger platforms like Ye and Andrew Tate bare the brunt of the jokes. It has become so popular for people to use the same tactics as their favorite artists and politicians that many people on TikTok sound like 2016 Donald Trump, boys as young as 15 use Andrew Tates verbiage on a day to day basis.

The real question is are we getting to a place as a culture where we all might be unhinged? And is social media the cause of this or has it just highlighted an issue that’s been ignored for far too long?
