Mary “Cokie” Roberts, influential journalist for the Washington Broadcast, passed away Tuesday September 17th, 2019, at the age of seventy five from complications of breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2002. Working in a field dominated by men, Roberts was a catalyst for women journalists all over America. She was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and her name was added to the list of American Women in Radio and Television’s 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting and journalism. Roberts was also a renowned author and historian on the topic of the role of women in American history. She was a New York Times bestseller for a number of books on the subject, her most popular being Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation and Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation, which was turned into a documentary. She will be forever remembered as an important figure for women and has been honored as a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress.
