An Interview With Katharine Lualdi from TRIO Services

Jess interviewed Katharine from TRIO Services. The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Name Katharine Lualdi

What is your position at the college? Director and Advisor of TRIO Student Support Services. (TRIO is a federally funded grant focused on personalized advising to help students meet their goals.)

What part of your job do you find most challenging? The most challenging part is that we can only have a 140 students in our program at a time, per the rules of the grant. I wish the program could be bigger, to be able to serve more students.

What part of your job is your favorite? My favorite part of my job is working with the students and getting to know them really well; they bring a lot of great perspectives and great goals.

What is the best advice you have for a student’s, success in college? [Students should] definitely reach out for support, and answers to questions, be as proactive as you can in using the resources available – this is your college education. Ask questions and seek what you need; self accountability and advocacy is important.

What is the best advice you have ever received? “Take chances and get outside of your comfort zone”

What are a couple of things on your bucket list, that you hope to do in the future? I want to hike the whole Appalachian Trail, and visit Alaska.

What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work? Open water swimming, reading, cooking, and speak French.

What is something we would never guess about you? I swam from Alcatraz to a beach on the San Francisco coast and I have a PH. D in History.

Top 3 favorite books of all time? The Velveteen Rabbit, The Brothers Karamazov and The Phantom Toll Booth.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time? Chariots of Fire, Birdman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark

If you could live in any book or a movie which one would you choose? A Wrinkle in Time.

Is there anything else you would like students to know about you? The door is always open at TRIO.
