Immersive Technology: Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality

Throughout the years, consumers have experienced the development of technology that improves our quality of life. Nowadays, technology has become an integral part of our lives. From connecting people all over Earth to taking pictures of a black hole, a lot of things that seemed impossible are possible. Let us take a step back and think about our limitations as humans. We are bound to the rules of nature, but what if we could experience something new to our reality? That’s where immersive technology comes in. With this kind of technology, we can perceive things through simulation. There are three types of immersive technology: Virtual reality(VR), Augmented Reality(AR), Mixed Reality(MR).

In Virtual Reality, a VR headset tricks users into thinking that they are in a different world. A user experiences computer-generated images and sounds and can manipulate the object or environment with the help of haptic controllers.

In Augmented Reality, digital information is relayed in the real world. For instance, the Snapchat filters are good examples of augmented reality. AR  keeps the real-world central but enhances it with digital images, layers that make it look like the object is present in real-time. Another example of AR is the furniture application that lets the consumer view how the furniture will look in their room.

In Mixed Reality, both VR and AR elements are combined. A user can interact with both physical as well as virtual elements. It is like working with a hologram. It is a fairly new and expensive technology. For example, Microsoft Hololens is a famous MR device. In terms of movies, Iron Man movies have shown a similar concept to MR.

Immersive technology has a huge potential. It can change the way we see the world. It can change the way we learn things, revolutionize the entertainment industry, or change the way we communicate.
