Cuba Bess was born in Fruita, Colorado, in 1997. Bess was an undrafted free agent signing by the Red Sox after the 2020 draft out of Grand Canyon University. Bess was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 39th round in 2016

I first asked him what the draft process was like in 2020 compared to 2016 coming out of Grand Canyon?“ The draft process was different. I was hurt for the first month of 2020 so I only got a chance to play in a couple games before the season was canceled. Everyone wanted to sign me as a free agent because they believed they didn’t see enough from years past. “

Bess mentions his favorite moment this season. “My favorite moment of 2021 was going 3-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a walk with 3 rbis and we walked off the Orioles in the bottom of the 9th.

I asked him what he is  looking forward to most in 2022 for baseball.  “I’m just looking forward to playing and competing again in 2022.”

I then asked him what The Florida Coast League was like compared to college and what was the adjustment like  “The FCL was draining. Practice everyday and then a game on top of that. In college, the team was more fundamentally sound and knew how to play as a team. In the FCL it was hard to get into a routine everyday especially when you weren’t playing everyday. Once you got into a routine and got comfortable at the plate, adjustments came naturally but it definitely was hard work.”

I finally asked him who his favorite team and player growing up were “My favorite team was the Red Sox and player was David Ortiz when I was growing up.”

As of March 31st, 2022 Bess was released from the Red Sox organization and is now a free agent.
