Anxiety

Anxiety, as we know, comes and goes. Sometimes, it can creep up on us when we least want it. Though, for some, it’s a daily battle that takes a big mental toll on us and is hard to overcome each day. Whether anxiety is an everyday problem or an irregular event, here are some helpful tips to avoid when anxiety hits next.

Tip 1: skip naptime.  Instead of napping, take that time and replace it with self-care. Take time and manage your needs, and ensure that you have the time to unwind and reset. At the end of the day, you’ll feel better about yourself knowing that you didn’t avoid your needs by sleeping.

Tip 2: Unhealthy eating. I know food options are difficult to manage living at college, but if you find yourself not eating well consider changing your eating habits. Eating does affect your anxiety. Eating healthy will decrease your anxiety.

Tip 3: Smoking/vaping, This one is a little more obvious. If you find yourself smoking/vaping stopping or smoking less will help anxiety.  Try to replace your habit of grabbing your smoking device and replace it with lollipops, candy, and or chewing gum. Having these replacements will help replace the urge. Smoking takes a big effect on increasing one’s anxiety, so it’s better to stay away.

Tip 4: Avoid social media. Spend time with the people you love. Try to avoid mindless scrolling on social media. You might think it’s harmless, but really you’re just comparing yourself to others. In moments of anxiety, the last thing you need is the ad is more anxious about seeing what other people are doing. The best thing for you is to focus on yourself.

Tip 5: Call your loved ones. Call your friends and family to hang out.  The people who bring out the best in you are the ones you want around during these tough times. It’s healthy to vent and rant to a person who you know will listen and care.

Tip 6: Avoid caffeine, instead drink decaffeinated coffee or light herbal teas. The last thing you want is the jitters.

Tip 7: Don’t procrastinate. You’re going to have to get it done anyway, so just get it done. I know you don’t want to do it. Make a plan, do it, and after it’s complete reward yourself! Big or small of a task, doesn’t matter because you did it!
