Tri For a Cure is the single largest fundraising triathlon in Maine in its 18th year. On July 12 Tri For a Cure will be hosted once again on the SMCC campus to celebrate 18 years and over $26 million raised in cancer research. Every dollar is given to the Maine Cancer Research foundation and focuses on prevention, early detection, and improved patient outcomes.
With a proud tagline, “Cancer tries, but we TRI harder!” over 1200 women will gather to participate in this athletic event. The event is an inclusive one noting in their Inclusivity Statement, “We welcome all women and girls (transgender and cisgender) as well as non-binary people who identify with the women’s community.” Ensuring the event stays open, welcoming, and focuses on the goal of raising as much money as they can to fight cancer.
So far this year, Tri For a Cure has already raised more than $2.1 million. On Thursday, July 9, Tri For a Cure posted its top ten fundraisers on their social media pages including Instagram. The top donators are, in order, Jana Rich, Jennifer Cook, Meredith Strang Burgess, Jen Belesca, Kate Murphy, Lynn Alexander, Laura Reed, Willy Reddick, Colleen Amann, and Tammy Champagne.
The race itself consists of a 1/3-mile swim, a 15-mile bike ride, and a 3-mile run. On Saturday, July 11, is Expo day where participants will be picking up their registration packs and racking their bikes for the big day. Various vendors are also welcome to attend to help make the event even more fun. The opening ceremony starts at 7:30am on Sunday the 12 and the race begins at 8pm.
